Three Hundreds, and Three hundred |
On Saturday 9/2/19 The First XI scored 314, with Brad Kruger and Troy Lamb each scoring hundreds at Mentone. Meanwhile, back at Murrumbeena Jared Williams, playing in the Second XI against Carnegie, made his maiden senior century. As an aside, both these matches were against the teams sitting top of the ladder. I was asked when the last time players made 100s in the same game, and also the last time 3 players made 100s on the same day. Addressing the first query, this is the seventh time that two batsmen have made 100s in the same innings on turf (since 53/54), the third time for the 1st XI. There have been two occurrences in the 3rd XI, and one each in the 2nds and 4ths. Incidentally, in the 1990/91 3rd XI Ban Carbone and Don McDermott did not bat together |
Pre-turf, the 'A' team achieved this feat twice, both in the same season,
with the same batsmen. Round 10 was, like Saturday's round 13, the second last
game of the season. An omen? The feat has also been done three times by the 5th XI since 53/54, twice in 89/90. The piece-de-resistance is undoubtedly the 5th XI of 1932/33, who in round 9 had three centurions in the same innings: Eddie Day (111), Alex Lundy (108) and WJ Riley (129) in a score of 451, the highest innings score ever recorded by the club. Perhaps the quality of the opposition might have lacking a little though, as on the second day they were rolled for less than 100 twice. |

Three Hundreds on same day |
After the 5th XI three tons in the same innings above, this is only the second time in the club's history that we have three (or more) centuries scored on the same day. The only other occurrence was in 2006/07, when John Patton (162, 1sts), John Bailes (105* 2nds) and Tom Mann (131 2nds) scored hundreds. In that round we were one hit, maybe one metre, away from having four centuries, as Troy Lamb was caught on the boundary for 96. |
Three scores of 70 or more in successive matches |
Brad Kruger's 105 was his third score of 70 or more in three successive matches - in fact across just eight calendar days. This is just the fifth time since playing on turf that this has been achieved Jeff Graham in 1966/679 (81 (2nd), 146* and 87) Leigh Hardham in 1988/89 (89, 71 and 78) Troy Lamb in 2010/11 (79, 113*, 113*) Troy Lamb starting from the Semi-final of 2010/11 (73), then rounds 1 and 2 of 2011/12 (77 and 133) Brad Kruger in 2018/19 (83,95*, 105) Note that Jeff Graham's run started in the 2nd innings of the last home-and-away round

Best Record against a singe club |
I was also asked about the club that the First XI has the best record against.
This can be answered in various ways. Firstly, the club we have played most often is Bentleigh (43 times) The opposition the 1st XI have beaten most often is Hampton (17 wins in 41 games). The club we have not lost to most often (win, draw, tie) is also Hampton (22). The highest winning percentage (min 10 games) is Richmond District (73% from 11). The highest not_loss percentage (min 10 games) is Dingley (84% from 12 games) If the question related to "streaks": The longest ever winning streak is 7 vs Newport between 68/69 and 90/91) The best current winning streak is 6 vs Middle Park, since 2014/15). If we beat Mentone next week then we will have a streak of 6 games without a loss - there was a tie in a T20 last season. |
Firxt XI scoring 300 in an Innings |
The First XI have now scored 300 or more 17 times on turf, twelve times batting first. We've never lost a game with 300 on the board. However Mentone successfully chased 286 just a week ago - another 30 runs might be a stretch too far, but they will take confidence from that chase. |
